Nu är det dags igen för SHF:s Medlemssymposium!
Den 25:e oktober välkomnar vi den kände herpetologen Romulus Whitaker till Stockholm och till Medlemssymposiet där Rom kommer att hålla ett antal föredrag om kungskobror och andra herptiler från Indien.
Vi äter frukost, lunch och middag på plats och umgås under denna herpetologiska heldag. Det kommer även att finnas böcker av Rom till salu – Crocodile Fever – Wildlife Adventures in New Guinea och Snakes of India-the Field Guide.
Romulus Whitaker är en amerikansk herpetolog bosatt sedan många år i Indien där han startade Madras Crocodile Band and Centre for Herpetology som föder upp krokodiler och samlar ormgift till serumproduktion. Numera studerar han kungskobror och andra herptiler i det vilda vid Agumbe Rainforest Research Station.

King Cobras – Agumbe Rainforest Research Station
This snake has been a life-long obsession. Ever since I found my first wild king cobra in the beautiful rainforests of Agumbe I wanted to learn more about them. In 2005 my dream came true and I bought land there and set up the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station with the financial help of the Whitley Fund for Nature. Since then we’ve done a telemetry study on king cobras and plenty of other research on amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and arthropods of Agumbe.

Saving the Ganges Gharial – The Gharial Conservation Alliance
Of all the world’s 23 species of crocodilians the gharial is certainly the strangest. It is also the most ancient of all the crocs and is now Critically Endangered with breeding populations in four places in India and Nepal. The Gharial Conservation Alliance was set up to conserve the gharial by studying its ecology and helping the Indian wildlife authorities in their efforts to conserve this wonderful animal.

Madras Crocodile Bank and Centre for Herpetology – Conservation, Education and Research
In the early 1970s Rom carried out surveys of crocodiles throughout India and found that all three species were faced with extinction. He set up what is now the world’s largest crocodile gene bank with 18 species. Half a million people visit the Madras Crocodile Bank each year to see its 2,000 crocs, turtles, lizards and snakes and it is involved in reptile research and conservation throughout the country.

One Million Snakebites – My Favourite, Deadly Friends
Those of us who think snakes are beautiful, interesting and valuable creatures, well worth protecting also have to realize that snakebites kill nearly 50,000 people in India each year. The main species responsible are the spectacled cobra, common krait, Russell’s viper and saw-scaled viper. Rom’s current focus is snakebite prevention and treatment, a complex problem involving education, venom research and antivenom improvement.
